The HPE Apollo 4200 Gen9 Server combines high storage density and robust performance in a 2U form factor. It supports up to 28 LFF or 54 SFF hot-plug drives, providing industry-leading capacity for data-intensive workloads. With the LFF chassis, users can achieve up to 224 TB of storage using 8 TB drives, scaling to over 4.4 PB in a standard 42U rack. For high-performance applications, the SFF chassis supports up to 54 SAS or SSD drives with 12 Gb/s throughput, ideal for Hadoop, content delivery, and object storage workloads. Its efficient design and management features make it a standout solution for modern enterprise storage needs.
The HPE Apollo 4200 Gen9 Server does not natively support GPU accelerators in its standard configuration. It is primarily designed for storage-dense workloads and high-capacity data applications like Hadoop, object storage, and content delivery, rather than compute-intensive tasks that require GPUs.

Processors & Memory
The HPE ProLiant XL420 Gen9 Motherboard, integrated into the Apollo 4200 rack server, supports up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors, delivering scalable performance for enterprise workloads. Processor mixing is not supported, ensuring consistent and reliable operation. Each processor socket supports 8 DIMMs, for a total of 16 DIMMs and up to 1.0 TB of DDR4 SmartMemory, with speeds of up to 2400 MT/s, depending on the configuration.
Installing both processors unlocks additional expansion with PCIe slots 5, 6, and 7, offering flexibility for networking or storage upgrades. For enhanced expandability, the optional 2 SFF and 2 Full-Height Half-Length Riser Kit (806564-B21) enables PCIe slots 3 and 4 by utilizing slot 2 as a standup expansion, disabling it in the process.
HPE Smart Storage Dual-Controller | B140i & P840ar
Apollo 4200 has the P840ar embedded in the chassis by default, including the HPE Smart Storage Battery. It also has the B140i Controller embedded in the system that only works in UEFI mode. The B140i will not operate in Legacy mode. Users can choose between the hardware RAID (P840ar) for advanced features and performance or the software RAID (B140i) for simpler configurations.

2SFF and 2 FHHL Riser kit (806564-B21) Some cards can only be installed in certain PCIe Slots and might require other items for the integration to work properly. For example, if you want to use the Smart Array P441 or P841. You need to install the 2SFF and 2 FHHL Riser kit (806564-B21). The reason why is that these cards are only supported in PCIe slot 3 or 4. The only way to enable these slots is with this Riser Kit.
P440 SAS Controller (726821-B21) If you want to install the P440 SAS Controller (726821-B21) you better have the PCIe slot 1 open since this is the only slot that supports this card. The reason for this card is to provide support for SAS and SATA drives in the Rear and 2nd HDD Cage.
HPE H240 12Gb 2-ports Int Smart Host Bus Adapter (726907-B21) The last adapter with requirements is the HPE H240 12Gb 2-ports Int Smart Host Bus Adapter (726907-B21). This adapter provides support for the rear SAS/SATA Drive Cage. If this card is selected, it is required to also install the HBA H240 FIO Rear Cable Kit (838823-B21) and HBA H240 FIO Controller Mode for Rear Storage (838827-B21).
Controller Modes
The (5) Controller modes provide different methods to controlling the drive bays. There are 2 Front Drive Bays and 1 optional rear drive bay with 3 different options. If you install a rear drive option, one of the controller modes below must be selected. To make life easy we have placed the supported Controller modes under each rear drive cage.

Networking Abilities | FlexibleLOM
With 7 PCIe slots and 1 Dedicated FlexibleLOM PCIe slot supporting 1Gb or 10Gb networking. The combination of FlexibleLOM, integrated NICs, and PCIe networking adapters makes the Apollo 4200 Gen9 server highly adaptable for a wide range of networking demands, from standard enterprise applications to high-performance computing environments.
The FlexLOM can only be installed in PCIe Slot 1.

HPE Apollo 4200 Gen9 Redundant Fan Kit (806562-B21). For 1 processor configuration, the Redundant Fan Kit (806562-B21) will ship 4 additional fans, for a total of 8 fans. There will be one spare fan in the carton for the future upgrade to 2 processors. For 2 processor configurations, the HPE Apollo 4200 Gen9 Redundant Fan Kit (806562-B21) will ship 5 fans for redundant function.

HPE Power Supply Units (PSU)
The HPE Apollo 4200 Gen9 server features hot-swappable Flex Slot PSUs available in 500W, 800W, 1400W, and 1600W capacities, offering scalability and redundancy for high-availability environments. These PSUs, certified with 80 PLUS Platinum or Titanium for energy efficiency, are compact and modular, saving space and reducing operational costs. To maintain proper cooling and performance, specific PSU wattages may require additional fan configurations.
All power supplies must be of the same input voltage, output rating, and efficiency rating. If non-matching power supplies are installed, you may receive an error message and/or experience operational issues with your server.
