Extra Storage DAS Disk Shelves
The HPE ProLiant Apollo 4500 Gen9 can expand its storage with the addition of either the D6000 6Gb/s or the D6020 12Gb/s Disk Shelves.
The D6000 as part of a straight-forward in-rack 6 Gb/s SAS implementation that delivers high-density, low-cost external zoned direct attach storage for HPE BladeSystem servers. Easily configure storage on the fly with easy to use management software. Supports seventy (70) 3.5" LFF Universal hot pluggable SAS or SAS (Midline) MDL drives.
(Apollo 4520 Only) The D6020 12Gb/s Disk Shelve can be directly connected to ProLiant Gen9 servers using the Smart Array P441, and the P841 Controllers using a standard 2M SAS cable. The HPE D6020 also supports the HPE H241 Host Bus Adapter (HBA). The HPE Apollo A4520 supports six (6) D6020 enclosures per A4520 (3 per node).

HPE Apollo 4500 Gen9 Base Knowledge.
The first step to configuring the Apollo 4500 is knowing which of the 3 Chassis you need. The main thing to know about these chassis is the Storage and Node Server amounts. The Apollo 4520 is special in that it holds only SAS Drives. While the other two can hold a combination of SAS/SATA HDD and SSDs. Each server node holds up to 8 DDR4 DIMMs per processor with 16 total DIMMs on a two-socket configuration per server.
Below are the Chassis to choose from. The Apollo 4510 contains one I/O module; Apollo 4520 has two I/O modules, and Apollo 4530 has three I/O modules.
HPE Apollo 4510 - 799581-B21
This chassis holds (1) XL450 Node server (786593-B21) and a total of 68 LFF Drives when the rear 8 LFF Drive cage (799377-B21) is installed. The rear-drive cage is unique to this chassis only.
This server supports the following Storage Controller configuration. Single or Dual P440 and H20 Controllers. This system also supports (1) P840 Smart Array controller. The Management Module already comes with the Storage Battery which can support up to two controllers per server.

This chassis holds (2) XL450 Node servers (786594-B22) and a total of 23 LFF Drives per server with a total of 46 LFF Drives. The Apollo 4520 contains 2 expanders per server tray. These 2 Expanders allow for shared storage across the two servers.
The Apollo 4520 System uses HPE H240 Smart HBA for LFF SAS drives and supports single and dual installation for the HPE H240 Smart Host Bus Adapter. RAID Mode is not supported with the dual controllers selected.

HPE Smart Storage Controllers
HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i SATA RAID is located on the server node and controls the two small form factor (SFF/2.5") hard drives and M.2 drives internally. If you do not plan on selecting an HPE Storage Controller, this B140i (784308-B21) option may be selected to support RAID and Hot-plug capabilities for SATA hard drives. The B140i does not support SAS hard drives.
The Apollo 4500 System, with its centralized HPE Smart Storage Battery, supports up to two Smart Array Controllers per node in the I/O module. This dual controller configuration per node server is only supported in the 4510 and 4520 Node Servers.
If SAS drives are selected, P244br or H244br is required.
The Apollo 4520 System uses HPE H240 Smart HBA for LFF SAS drives and requires software to manage failover.
For hardware RAID/HBA of bulk storage LFF drives, one of the following Controllers is required:
- HPE Smart Array P440/4G Controller
- HPE Smart Array P840/4G Controller
- HPE H240 Smart HBA

SA/HBA that end in 1 refer to external controllers for storage outside of the system. 0 refers to internal storage

The total PCIe slots available depend on the number of processors selected. One processor provides support for 2 PCIe slots (slots 1 and 2) and Two processors provide support for 4 PCIe slots per XL450 Node Server. Each riser has 1 FlexibleLOM slot and 4 PCIe slots.

The expansion slot descriptions above apply to Apollo 4510 and Apollo 4530 models. The Apollo 4520 System offers a choice of “HPE Apollo 4500 x16 I/O Module Kit,” (855128-B21). which contains one x16 bus width slot and three x8 PCIe slots, or “HPE Apollo 4500 x8 FIO I/O Module,” (855129-B21) which contains expansion slots identical to the above-listed chart.
Networking Abilities | FlexibleLOM
The Apollo 4500 Gen9 comes with the HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 361i Network Adapter. You can elect to use a FlexibleLOM adapter, which enables increased I/O capacity. The HPE ProLiant XL450 Node server can also support InfiniBand and Omni-Path options up to 100Gb of networking speeds. Each ProLiant XL450 Node server can support up to 4 PCIe slots.
HPE Apollo 4500 Gen9 Cooling
Each chassis is shipped with 5 standard hot-plug fan modules. There are no upgrades to the cooling of this system.
HPE Power Supply Units (PSU)
A minimum of two power supplies per chassis is required with the max of 4 PSU supported.
