Dell PowerEdge R720xd

The Dell PowerEdge R720xd is a 2U two-socket rack server built for maximum internal storage. It runs up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 processors with up to 12 cores each and 24 DDR3 DIMM slots for up to 768GB at 1866 MT/s, and holds up to 26x 2.5" drives or 12x 3.5" drives plus two rear 2.5" bays. Six PCIe 3.0 slots, a choice of network daughter cards, redundant power and iDRAC7 make it a strong fit for storage and big-data workloads. Fully configurable.

It has 24 DDR3 DIMM sockets for up to 768GB, running at up to 1866 MT/s with E5-2600 v2 processors.

Up to 26 front and rear 2.5-inch drives, or twelve 3.5-inch front drives plus two 2.5-inch rear drives, using PERC H310, H710 or H710P. Please specify your capacity needs when you submit your quote configuration.

Both share the same processors, memory and iDRAC7, but the R720xd trades GPU support and some slot space for a much larger drive cage: up to 26 small or 12 large drives versus 16 or 8 on the R720. Dell's reference guide lists internal GPUs as not supported on the R720xd.

The Gen 13 R730xd moves to Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 processors and DDR4-2400, raises memory to 3TB, adds a 16x 3.5-inch layout and a 1.8-inch SSD option, a dedicated PERC slot and iDRAC8. Both are 2U dual-socket storage servers with 24 DIMM slots.
