Cyber Resilient Architecture for Zero Trust IT environment & operationsSecurity is integrated into every phase of the PowerEdge lifecycle, including protected supply chain and factory-to-site integrity assurance. Silicon-based root of trust anchors end-to-end boot resilience while Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and role-based access controls ensure trusted operations.
Chassis Options
Inside the Dell PowerEdge XE9640 Rack Server the top 1U is split up by 2x 1U trays. One tray holds the system board with DIMMS and CPU while the second tray holds the drives and fans. The bottom of the system is where the differences come in between the servers. The Intel and Nividia layouts have different Power Distribution Boards. While the Nvidia Configuration also has a PCIe switchboard (PSB) that holds two cold plates and provides more communication between all the PCIe components in the server.

The XE9640 has CPUs and GPUs (and a few other minor components) directly liquid cooled 100% of the time while other components like DDR5 DIMMs, PCIe cards, PSUs and storage are air-cooled with a max inlet air temperature of 35C.
Liquid cooling components in a data center include facility water, cooling distribution units (CDU) and rack manifolds (looks like a PDU but for water). The XE9640 has a higher flow-rate requirement than the rest of PowerEdge 16G platforms. As such, the rack manifold is not shared with the other platforms.
Memory
The memory is a bit different than most servers. Each of the two chassis options has different DIMM supports. The Intel GPU XE9640 Rack server supports up to 16 DIMM slots (with 8 DIMMs per processor). The Max memory is 1TB RDIMM. While the Nvidia GPU Chassis can support 8 DIMMS, 16 DIMMs, and 32 DIMMs with a max RDIMM of 2TB.
Intel GPU Configuration DIMM Speed (MT/s) | DIMM Type | DIMM Capacity (GB) | Ranks per DIMM | Data Width | DIMM Volts (V) |
4800 | RDIMM | 64 | 2 | x4 | 1.1 |
Nvidia GPU Configuration DIMM Speed (MT/s) | DIMM Type | DIMM Capacity (GB) | Ranks per DIMM | Data Width | DIMM Volts (V) |
4800 | RDIMM | 16 | 1 | x8 | 1.1 |
4800 | RDIMM | 32 | 2 | x8 | 1.1 |
4800 | RDIMM | 64 | 2 | x4 | 1.1 |
Expansion Slots
The XE9640 supports up to 4 PCIe slots (4 x16 Gen5) when one of the two risers configs is installed. Both processors must be installed for all 4 PCIe slots to be enabled. Each Chassis has its own Riser Config. You are not able to install the Nvidia Riser config in the Intel XE9640 Rack Server and vice versa.

GPU Support
The XE9640 supports two types of GPUs. The First is an NVIDIA H100 SXM 700W NVLINK GPU and the second id an Intel Data Center Max GPU Series 1550 OAM 600W Xelink GPU are the only supported SXM GPUs.
The GPUs have special Liquid Cooling, please refer to the installation manual for more details. The GPUS sits on the bottom tray of this 2U sysem. The top tray holds the CPUs and drives.
Intel GPU Board
This Intel Board holds 4x Intel Data Center Max GPU Series 1550 OAM 600W Xelink GPU. When installed, an L-shaped power distribution board (PDB) provides each Intel GPU Power and PCI lanes.
NVIDIA GPU Board
This NVIDIA Board holds 4x NVIDIA H100 SXM 700W NVLINK. This configuration has two Power Distribution Boards (PDB & PDB2) and a PCIe Switch Board (PSB). These three boards provide the Power and PCIe lanes to each GPU.
Networking
Like most Gen 16 Dell Severs this rack server has an optional 2x 1GbE LOM and an OCP 3.0 slots. The OCP slot can support up to 4 Ports with the max port speed being 25GbE.
Storage Controllers
The XE9640 only has 4 drives so there is only the PERC 12 Internal SW RAID S160 controller for supporting the drives. You can also install the optional BOSS-N1 Boot Device which holds up to 2x M.2 NVMe SSD Drives.
