Boot Optimized Storage Solution

The Boot Optimized Storage Solution (BOSS) provides a dedicated RAID/SSD boot solution designed for boot optimization, freeing up server disk slots for data storage instead.

The HW RAID BOSS-S2 card is a limited-feature RAID controller supporting M.2 SATA-only SSDs, presented as either non-RAID disks or a single RAID 1 volume. Factory installation supports 240GB and 480GB disk capacities.

IDSDM

The IDSDM is designed to support hypervisor boot — a minimal OS that runs primarily in memory and doesn't rely heavily on the IDSDM for I/O. Write activity should be kept low, since SD media is prone to wear over time.

The internal USB and IDSDM share the same slot and cannot be installed together.

The R350 supports both a PCIe Adapter PERC and a front PERC (fPERC), though not every storage controller is available in both form factors.

  • PowerEdge Hardware RAID controllers (PERC) series 10, 11 are designed for:
    • Enhanced performance
    • Fault tolerance
    • Simplified management of RAID array drives
  • PowerEdge controller series 10, 11 support older legacy SAS and SATA drive interfaces
  • Dell S150 is software RAID solution for PowerEdge systems.
