The Dell™ PowerVault™ MD1220 direct-attached storage is the second generation of our low-cost, high-capacity expansion enclosure that improves density, versatility, and performance to enhance support for mainstream and capacity-intensive applications.
Drive Mixing Supported
Ability to mix and match 7.2K (nearline), 10K, and 15K RPM SAS Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) with Solid State Drives (SSDs). This includes SAS HDDs that support Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) technology on a single PERC H800 or H810 HostRAID adapter.
The PowerVault MD1220 expansion enclosure is designed to support high-performance applications such as e-mail or database applications that store active and frequently changing information. The PowerVault MD1220 is Dell’s energy-efficient modular storage array and the first modular enclosure that can expand to support 192 drives including Solid State Drives (SSDs).
- Seamless server expansion for 6Gb/s SAS environments
- Supports performance-intensive applications such as Web server, database, and e-mail
- 2.5-inch small-form-factor (SFF) array, energy-efficient array
- Up to twenty four (24) 2.5-inch hot-pluggable SAS Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) and SAS Solid State Drives (SSDs).
- Maximum Capacity (per enclosure) 12TB using twenty-four (24) 500GB 7200 RPM 6Gb/s SAS HDDs
- Expansion Capabilities, PERC H810 enables expansion to 8 enclosures, 4 per port
- Two fully redundant power supplies Wattage 600W
Maximum efficiency
The PowerVault MD1220 improves energy efficiency over the previous generation with new 80 PLUS® Silver certified power supplies. This enhancement augments the power, heat and space efficiencies already gained from the SFF array. In fact, 2.5-inch disks consume less power and 70% less space than 3.5-inch drives. Combined with variable-speed and temperature-controlled fans, the MD1220 is optimized to deliver performance and energy efficiency in a single array.
Keeping up with business needs
The PowerVault MD1220 offers customers the ability to support mainstream, capacity-intensive, and performance-intensive applications in a single storage solution. This flexibility makes it easy to tier your data by matching your data requirements and drive characteristics. The following features maximize the efficiency of your storage solution:
- Ability to mix and match
7.2K (nearline), 10K, and 15K RPM SAS Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) with Solid State Drives (SSDs). This includes SAS HDDs that support Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) technology.
- 6Gbps SAS:
Twice the throughput of the previous generation of direct-attached storage, the PowerVault MD1220 can satisfy even the most performance-intensive applications such as web, database and email hosting
- Solid-state drives (SSD):
Pair the increased IOPs and throughput of 6Gbps SAS with support for SSDs for an ideal solution for applications that rely on random-block access
- Redundant path with I/O load balancing:
Even if a single cable path fails from one port of the PERC H810, you will continue to have access to your data through the second port
The PowerVault™ MD1200 and MD1220 require the PERC H800 or H810 for Server connectivity. The PERC H800 or H810 is a PCIe 2.0, dual port (2 x4), hardware RAID controller offering 512MB standard battery-backed cache and RAID level support for RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60. The key features of the PERC H800 or H810:
- 6Gb/s SAS (SAS 2.0)
- Enables daisy-chaining up to 8 enclosures (4 per port)
- Enables mixing 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch enclosures in the same daisy-chain
- Enables Redundant Path with Automatic I/O load balancing
- Supports Self-Encrypting Drive (SED)
- Requires specific SED drive part numbers
