Are you ready to compete in the Big Data arena by making the leap into enterprise-class server storage architecture? The HPE Apollo 4200 Gen9 Server offers revolutionary storage density in a 2U form factor, with one of the highest storage capacities in any 2U server. When you are running object storage, Hadoop®, content delivery, or other data-intensive workloads on general-purpose servers, the HPE Apollo 4200 allows you to save valuable data center space through its unique density-optimized 2U form factor which holds up to 28 Large Form Factor (LFF) or 54 Small Form Factor (SFF) hot-plug drives.
If you want to grow your Big Data solutions with infrastructure that is ready to scale, but prefer the familiarity of 2U hardware, the HPE Apollo 4200 Gen9 Server, with up to 224 TB per server, is the ideal enterprise bridge to purpose-built, density optimized infrastructure. And there are no special racks required as it fits easily into standard racks with a depth of 32-inches per server.
Market-leading Storage Capacity in a 2U Form Factor
The HPE Apollo 4200 Gen9 Server offers market-leading storage capacity among 2U storage servers, supporting up to 28 Large Form Factor (LFF) hot-plug drives or 54 Small Form Factor (SFF) hot-plug drives.
Object storage customers looking for a low cost-per-Gigabyte solution, the LFF model fits up to 224 TB of storage using 8 TB drives. This means that a 42U rack of HPE Apollo 4200 Gen9 Servers can fit over 4.4 PB! For higher storage capacities consider the HPE Apollo 4510 Chassis.
With high-performance Hadoop-based workloads, the HPE Apollo 4200 Gen9 Server can support up to 54 SAS or solid state disks (SSD) SFF drives with 12 Gb/s throughput and 15K revolutions per minute.
No special racks required, it is designed to accommodate hundreds of terabytes per server, but fits right into most pre-existing racks.

HPE Apollo 4200 Gen9 Base Knowledge.
The Enterprise Class ProLiant Apollo 4200 Gen9 Rack Server in a 2U Chassis with up to 28 LFF or 54 SFF Drives. Will get you into the Big Data Arena with the Storage Architecture that HPE has used in making this server. This density-optimized server has many options to choose from for networking and expansion cards. With up to 7 PCIe 3.0 slots with correct risers, you are guaranteed to be able to create the configuration you need for your network.
The HPE ProLiant XL420 Gen9 Motherboard server sits in the Apollo 4200 rack server and supports 2 Intel Xeon E5-2600v3 or v4 processors. Mixing of processors is not allowed and each socket supports 8 DIMMs with a total of 16 DIMMs. If both processors are installed you can use PCIe slots 5, 6, and 7. You also can install the 2 SFF and 2 Full Height Half Length Riser Kit (806564-B21) the two PCIe slots 3-4 are available by using slot 2 as a standup expansion slot, so slot 2 is not available.
This Rack server by HPE has rear Drive options for both the LFF and SFF servers. When installing the rear drives please make sure you have the correct controller and cables installed. This is where the server gets a bit tricky. I recommend reading the Spec Manual PDF below or clicking on each Storage controller to know the requirements and limitations of each. If you have any questions please feel free to contact our sales team today.

HPE Smart Storage Controllers
Apollo 4200 has the P840ar embedded in the chassis by default, including the HPE Smart Storage Battery. It also has the B140i Controller embedded in the system that only works in UEFI mode. The B140i will not operate in Legacy mode.
Some cards can only be installed in certain PCIe Slots and might require other items for the integration to work properly. For example, if you want to use the Smart Array P441 or P841. You need to install the 2SFF and 2 FHHL Riser kit (806564-B21). The reason why is that these cards are only supported in PCIe slot 3 or 4. The only way to enable these slots is with this Riser Kit.
If you want to install the P440 SAS Controller (726821-B21) you better have the PCIe slot 1 open since this is the only slot that supports this card. The reason for this card is to provide support for SAS and SATA drives in the Rear and 2nd HDD Cage.
The last adapter with requirements is the HPE H240 12Gb 2-ports Int Smart Host Bus Adapter (726907-B21). This adapter provides support for the rear SAS/SATA Drive Cage. If this card is selected, it is required to also install the HBA H240 FIO Rear Cable Kit (838823-B21) and HBA H240 FIO Controller Mode for Rear Storage (838827-B21).
Controller Modes
This is where the server gets a bit tricky with the controller modes and what needs / can be installed at the same time. This server has 5 Controller modes to choose from. Each has requirements and limitations and deals with the rear and front drives differently. Please note only 1 Controller Mode can be installed at any given time. If you install the Rear Drive Cage Kits (806563-B21) or (806564-B21) it is required to install one of the Controller Mode below.
HPE SATA B140i FIO Controller Mode for Rear Storage 813545-B21
- Can only be selected with SATA drives for rear HDDs.
HPE 2nd Cage FIO Controller Mode for Rear Storage 813546-B21
- The Rear HDDs will be under the same controller as the 2nd HDD cage
HPE SAS Smart HBA H240 FIO Controller Mode for Rear Storage 838827-B21
- The Rear HDDs will be under the optional HPE H240 12Gb 2-ports Int Smart Host Bus Adapter (726907-B21)
HPE SAS Smart Array P440 FIO Controller Mode for Rear Storage 838830-B21
- The Rear HDDs will be under the optional HPE Smart Array P440/4GB FBWC 12Gb 1-port Int SAS Controller (726821-B21)
HPE Dual SAS Smart Array P440 FIO Controller Mode for Front Storage P03845-B21
- The Rear HDDs will be under the default HPE Flexible Smart Array P840ar/2G FIO Controller and the two front HDD cage will be under the two optional HPE Smart Array P440/4GB FBWC 12Gb 1-port Int SAS Controller (726821-B21)
HPE Apollo 4200 Gen9 Plus PCI Risers
The Rack server holds 7 PCIe 3.0 Slots on the 2U chassis. The second processor must be installed to enable the use of the second PCIe slot. Along with PCIe slots, this system has 3 different Rear drive options. A 4LFF (806563-B21) option only allows on the LFF Chassis and two SFF options. The first option is a 6 SFF (838833-B21) drive cage and the second option is a mix of drives and PCIe slots. This option comes with the ability to use PCIe slots 3 and 4 along with 2 SFF drives (806564-B21).
There are some major differences when you install these rear-drive cages with the Storage Modes above. Please click on each Rear drive cage to view all the product information. Or, read the Spec Manual below.

Networking Abilities | FlexibleLOM
With 7 PCIe slots and 1 Dedicated FlexibleLOM PCIe slot supporting 1Gb or 10Gb networking. Please read up on some of the Storage controllers, there might be limitations on where they can go. Like the P440 can only be installed on Slot 1 of the PCIe slots. If you install the 2SFF and 2 FHHL risers. Slot 2 will be taken over with an expansion board that enables PCIe slots 3 and 4. If you would like to have all 7 PCIe slots enabled you will need to install the second processor.
