The Dell PowerEdge R760xa, is a purpose-built server designed to boost acceleration performance across the widest range of customer needs.

Meet your growing unstructured data needs with object storage technology

More capable and agile storage solution

Meet your growing unstructured data needs with object storage technology designed to be easily configurable, serviceable, and scalable. This 2U, 2 socket server is ideal for file and object storage, video capture/retrieval, and content delivery networks.

Storage tiering performance and capacity

Be confident knowing that with seven percent more drives and a capacity of up to 22 TB, the R760xd2 can manage the explosive growth of data. And, latency has been reduced using storage tiering and accelerators supported by PCIe Gen4. The system also offers a larger number of available PCIe slots with multiple configurations based on your requirements.

  • Maximize storage with seven percent more 3.5-inch drive space with up to 28 drives for a total capacity of 616 TB
  • Significantly reduce latency and improve performance using NVMe drives and NVIDIA accelerators
  • Reduce services cost when changing hot-plug drives and PCIe cards with the new external rail feature
  • Stay air-cooled with Smart Cooling technology including optimized chassis, fans, and baffles managed by Power Manager, the intelligent management software

Increase efficiency and accelerate operations with autonomous collaboration

The Dell OpenManage™ systems management portfolio delivers a secure, efficient, and comprehensive solution for PowerEdge servers. Simplify, automate and centralize one-to-many management with the OpenManage Enterprise console and iDRAC.

Cyber Resilient Architecture for Zero Trust IT environment & operations

Security is integrated into every phase of the PowerEdge lifecycle, including protected supply chain and factory-to-site integrity assurance. Silicon-based root of trust anchors end-to-end boot resilience while Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and role-based access controls ensure trusted operations

Configuration Rules and limitations

Before we start let me show you some odd rules that will change the way you configure the server.

  • Single CPU support is there only for No Riser Configruations
  • In a "No riser" Configuration. The System cannot support the same type of 2.5" drive in front and rear storage (4 x 2.5") when using 2.5" in a 3.5" Carrier.
  • Rear Storage has a Drive Capacity limit of 7.68TB
  • The PERC H965e is restricted to slot 3 in configuration 2
  • GPUs are supported in Configuration 3 Only
  • Non-populated DIMMs must have a blank in Configuration 3.
  • For more details about these rules and limitations, please read the manual below.
Drive Configuration Options:
Chassis Options:
  • (2) 12x 3.5" (12 + 12)
  • (2) 12x 3.5" with rear 4x 3.5" SAS/SATA
  • (2) 12x 3.5" with rear 2x U.2 NVMe
  • (2) 12x 3.5" with rear 4x E3.S NVMe
  • The Dell SAS Expander Card for the R760XD2 supports the Storage controllers H755 and the HBA355i. The SAS Expander along with those Storage controllers allows the system to support up to 50 SAS Drives at up to 12 Gb/s.

Processor, Heatsink & Fans
Image of the Processors supported in in the R760xd2 Rack Server Processor

The following lists the features and functions that are in the upcoming 4th Generation Intel® Xeon Scalable Processor offering:

  • Faster UPI with up to four Intel Ultra Path Interconnect (Intel UPI) at up to 16 GT/s, increasing multi-socket bandwidth.
  • More, faster I/O with PCI Express 5 and up to 80 lanes (per socket)
  • Enhanced Memory Performance with DDR5 support and memory speed up to 4800 MT/s in one DIMM per channel (1DPC) and 4400 MT/s in two DIMM per channel (2DPC)
  • New built-in accelerators for data analytics, networking, storage, crypto, and data compression

Image of the 6 STD Fan in the R760xd2 Rack Server Heatsink & Fans

This server does not support high-end CPUs so the Standard 2U Heat Sink is the only one for this server. The same goes for the Fan system in this server.

The 6x Standard Hot-Swap Fan is the only choice for the PowerEdge R760xd2 Rack Server. Please view the manual below for more detailed information about the Ambient Temperature by looking up the "Thermal Restrictions Matrix".

Memory Options

With two CPUs you can install up to 16 DDR5 DIMM slots, support RDIMM 1 TB max, and speeds up to 4800 MT/s. Supports registered ECC DDR5 DIMMs only.

Rated DIMM Speed (MT/s) DIMM Type DIMM Capacity (GB) Ranks per DIMM Data Width DIMM Volts
4800 RDIMM 16 1 8 1.1
4800 RDIMM 32 2 8 1.1
4800 RDIMM 64 2 4 1.1
GPU / Expansion Slot Options

The Dell PowerEdge R760xd2 has 5 Low Profile PCIe Slots on the system board. Slot 5, the closest to the PSU is dedicated to a PERC card. The system also supports 1 Riser that has two options. A Full Length and Half Length option. This riser takes up the center of the chassis and gets installed above the OCP card. This riser provides two Half Length slots or 2 Full Length slots. When installing the riser your system will be able to support 1x DW GPU and or 2x SW GPUs.

Some PCIe slots get used when you install a rear drive cage. For example, when you install the 4x 3.5" rear drive cage, you will only have access to 3 PCIe slots with one of those being the dedicated perc slot 5. View the image above or the manual below for more details.

GPU Options

Up to 2 x 75 W SW, 1 x 75 W SW + 1 x 150 W SW or 1 x 180 W DW

All GPU/FGPA cards require 2U L-type HSK and GPU shroud. The system can hold up to 3 GPUs at once with the Riser installed. The riser can support a DW GPU card while slots 1 and 4 hold a SW GPU each. This is just one type of GPU configuration the system can support. For more GPU details, please refer to the manuals below.

Networking Adapters LOM/OCP

The Dell PowerEdge R760XD2 has 2 Networking options to choose from. Both have dedicated slots and do not use a PCIe slot. This is great since with rear drives the PCIe slots can go from 5 to 2 with the installation of rear drives.

LOM/OCP 3.0

The R760xd2 has an optional 2 x 1 GbE LOM slot or the optional OCP 3.0 x8 slot for expanding the system networking capabilities. The OCP has 4 ports and speeds reaching up to 100Gb/s over those 4 Ports (4x 25Gb/s).

Storage Controllers Options
Storage Controllers

Dell's RAID controller options offer performance improvements, including the Adapter PERC solution. Adapter PERC provides a base RAID HW controller in PCIe Slot 5 which is a dedicated slot just for the PERC or HBA.

Note: PERC interposer cable has to be installed as PCIe Slot 5 to install adapter PERC on the system.

SAS Expander

To support more than 16 Drives on a single controller you will need to install the SAS Expander. The SAS Expander has a dedicated slot on the system board near the power supplies. Please read the Controller Specs below for more details.
