The new Dell PowerEdge XR7620 is a short-depth 2U, 2-socket server with datacenter-level compute delivering high-performance, high-capacity and reduced latency. Purpose-built for the edge, the PowerEdge XR7620 is designed for the most demanding workloads including industrial automation, video analytics, point of sale analytics, AI inferencing and edge point device aggregation.

Dell PowerEdge XR7620 Base Knowledge

The airflow in this XR7620 Rack server from Dell is the main difference between each option in this system. The Black band on the PSU indicates it’s a normal airflow and the blue band on the PSU is a reverse airflow system. The next major difference in the Dell XR7620 Rack Server is the Drives Supported.

Memory

The Dell XR7620 Rack Server supports up to 16x ECC DDR5 RDIMM only, with a max of 2TB at speeds up to 4800 MT/s. Do not mix DIMM module types or mix x4 and x8 DIMMs within a memory channel.

Expansion Slots

With Single Wide and Double Wide GPU support, you will need a few risers. With 2 similar configurations up to 5 PCIe slots (4 x16 Gen4/5, 1 x16 LP Gen4) you will have all the options you need to install up to 5 SW GPUs or up to 2 DW GPUs.

This system can support up to 5 x 75 W (Single Width Full Height/Half Length, Low Profile) GPU or up to 2 x 300 W (Double Width Full Height/Full Length). Below are all the GPUs supported by the Dell XR7620 Rack Server.

Networking / Boot Option

Like most Gen 16 Dell servers the system comes with 2 x 1 GbE LOM and an optional 1 x OCP card 3.0 slot. The OCP slot can support up to 4 ports at 25GbE. You also can install NIC Adapters in one of the 5 PCIe slots depending on the Riser Configuration you install.

The PowerEdge XR7620 system supports two 10/100/1000 Mbps Network Interface Controller (NIC) ports embedded on the LAN on Motherboard (LOM) and up to four ports integrated on the Open Compute Project (OCP) cards.

On the system board, the supported OCP PCIe width is x8; when x16 PCIe width is installed, it is downgraded to x8.

BOSS is a RAID solution that is designed to boot operating systems and segregate operating system boot drives from data on server-internal storage. The BOSS-N1 has its own dedicated slot on the system board.

M.2 devices are read intensive with 480 GB or 960 GB capacity

Storage Controllers

The Gen 16 Dell XR7620 Rack server supports PERC11 and PERC12 controllers. The system supports fPERC style of controllers for RAID and SAS control. The PERC12 controllers are the only controllers to support NVMe and E3.S drives.

Align and slide the storage MIL bracket on the drive cage. Using a Phillips 1 screwdriver, tighten the screws securing the storage MIL bracket on the drive cage.

Align the power supply bracket to the rear of the power supply cage and slide it in to secure it in place. Using a Phillips 1 screwdriver, secure the power supply rugged bracket.

Align the tabs on the system cover with the guide slots on the system. Close the system cover release latch. Using a Phillips 1 screwdriver, tighten the screw to secure the system cover.

Power & Dimensions

Supports up to 2 Hot Swap Power Supplies. If only one is installed the PSU blank will be installed for the second PSU. Front Access Reverse Airflow Config has a BLUE band on the PSU while the Rear Access Normal Flow Config has a black/red band.
