The HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen12 is designed to get more compute density out of each rack unit while reducing power and virtualization constraints. It delivers stronger expansion options than earlier generations, driven by Intel Xeon 6 processors that scale up to 144 cores, support for as much as 4 TB of memory, and PCIe Gen5 connectivity for higher performance and improved data-center efficiency.

The MR (MegaRAID) and SR (SmartRAID) controller families use different management tools and cannot be installed together in the same server. When paired with a tri-mode U.3 backplane, both series support SAS, SATA, and NVMe drives, allowing mixed drive types in one system. This server has no built-in software RAID. Direct-attached SATA drives run in AHCI mode only, so a hardware RAID controller is required for any RAID functionality.

The SR series is the high-end controller line, only available in type-p PCIe form factor.
This is the go-to choice for high drive count configurations or maximum storage throughput. Like the cached MR controllers it requires a battery or capacitor for cache protection.

The cached models (MR408i-o, MR416i-o, MR416i-p) add a Flash-Backed Write Cache (FBWC)
Choosing Between MR and SR
- All HPE MRxxx RAID controllers support SAS, SATA, and NVMe drives
- Need OCP slot deployment → MR type-o only
- Simple RAID, no cache needed → MR216i-o or MR216i-p
- Need cache, moderate drive count → MR408i-o or MR416i-o/p
