Tackle big data storage
Choose drive size, type, hot-plug/non-hot-plug capabilities and connections to reach up to 48TB per sled, with up to four sleds per chassis for 192TB. The PowerEdge C8000XD storage sled is available with up to 12 x 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SAS/SATA HDDs or 24 x 2.5” SATA SSDs.

Up to four storage sleds can be cascaded through mini SAS ports to deliver up to 192TB of storage capacity to capacity-hungry applications.

When populated with highly reliable SAS drives, the PowerEdge C8000XD is ideally suited for enterprise-level transactional applications such as modeling and simulation. With high-capacity SATA drives, the PowerEdge C8000XD can be optimized for reference and high-bandwidth data applications such as disk-based backup, document imaging and video surveillance. With high‑speed SSDs, the PowerEdge C8000XD can be optimized to meet a high-volume of real-time demands, such as online transaction processes, database queries, hosting and cloud services.


Expander Configuration Mode
The C8000XD sled is equipped with a SAS expander to operate the hard- drives in single port, dual port, or expansion mode. Use mini-SAS x4 cable(s) to connect a compute sled to your C8000XD sled.


Single port mode

In single port mode, the storage sled supports 12 x 2.5 or 3.5-inch SAS/SATA/SSD hard-drives from a single cable connection.

The figure to the right shows a single path connection from a single-HBA/RAID compute sled to the storage sled’s external mini-SAS A1 and A2 connectors. In this mode, the hard-drives in the storage sled are cascaded for extended storage capacity.



Dual port mode

In dual port mode, the storage sled SAS expander board supports 12 x 2.5 or 3.5-inch SAS hard-drives from a dual-cable connection.

The figure to the right shows a dual path connection from a dual-HBA compute sled connected to the storage sled’s external mini-SAS A1 and B1 connectors. This mode delivers dual path functionality and redundant path capability



Expansion mode (non-zoning)

In expansion mode, the storage sled SAS expander board supports 24 x 2.5 SSD hard-drives from a dual-cable connection.

The figure to the right shows a dual path connection from a single-RAID compute sled connected to the storage sled’s external mini-SAS A1 and A2 connectors. In this mode, the hard-drives in the storage sled are cascaded for extended storage capacity.



Expansion mode (four zones)

In expansion mode with four zones configuration, the storage sled SAS expander board supports 24 x 2.5 SSD hard-drives from a single-cable connection. The SAS connections are grouped into four zones (A1/Zone 0, A2/Zone 1, B1/Zone 2, B2/Zone 3) and each zone allows the host/compute sled to access a group of hard-drives in the storage sled.

The SAS connections are grouped into two zones (A1/Zone 0 and A2/Zone 1) and each zone allows the host/compute sled to access a group of hard-drives in the storage sled.
