The MR (MegaRAID) and SR (Smart Array) controller families use different management tools and cannot be installed together in the same server. With a tri-mode U.3 backplane, both series support SAS, SATA, and NVMe drives, allowing mixed drive types in one system. This server has no built-in hardware RAID, so a storage controller is required for any RAID functionality — direct-attached SATA drives without one run in AHCI mode only.

Choosing Between MR and SR

What is Intel® VROC (Virtual RAID on CPU)?
Intel® VROC (Virtual RAID on CPU) is a software-based RAID solution for direct-attached NVMe SSDs, run through the CPU instead of a hardware storage controller.
- Requires the server boot mode to be set to UEFI Mode
- RAID support is disabled by default — enabled and configured through UEFI System Utilities (not supported in Intelligent Provisioning)
- Requires an Intel VROC driver (OS-specific) and a VROC Hybrid RAID license to enable NVMe RAID
- All drives in a VROC RAID volume must share the same interface and form factor
- Managed via UEFI System Utilities, Intel VROC GUI/CLI (Windows), or mdadm CLI (Linux)
- Intel VROC Premium — R7J59AAE (E-RTU), R7J57A (FIO Software): RAID 0, 1, 5, 10; up to 32 NVMe drives depending on processor
- Intel VROC RAID 1 — S3Q39AAE (E-RTU), S3Q19A (FIO Software): RAID 1 only; up to 32 NVMe drives depending on processor
- SATA drives not supported by either license
