The Dell PowerEdge R940 is built to power mission-critical applications and real-time decision-making, offering scalable four-socket performance and support for up to 12 NVMe drives in a compact 3U chassis. Reaching the full four-socket configuration requires installing the Processor Expansion Module (PEM), which stacks the processors and adds 24 additional DIMM slots.

The Dell PowerEdge R940 features 8 hot-swap fans with full N+1 redundancy, allowing continuous operation even if one fan fails. Each fan can be replaced without powering down the system, and all 8 fans sit within a fan cage that lowers into the fan tray.
An active power management feature on this system governs fan speed and thermal settings, helping reduce fan usage and overall system power consumption based on the operating environment.

Each CPU includes 12 memory DIMM slots, totaling 48 DIMMs across the system, split across six channels with 2 DIMMs per channel. Best performance comes from populating all channels evenly per CPU — either 6 or 12 DIMMs total.

RDIMMs offer higher-capacity options along with advanced RAS features, making them the most commonly used DIMM type with a solid balance of frequency, capacity, and rank structure choices.
LRDIMMs push memory capacity beyond RDIMM limits, though at higher power draw, using a buffer to reduce loading to a single load across all DDR signals for greater density.
RDIMMs and LRDIMMs must not be mixed.
PMem
(Intel Optane persistent memory)
PMem is available in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities, with App Direct Mode unlocking added performance and persistence for supported applications. It pairs with RDIMMs or LRDIMMs, supports up to 6 modules per CPU, and requires no battery for its persistent memory functionality.
2400 W PSU is required.
NVDIMM-N
(Non-Volatile DIMM)
This persistent memory solution combines NAND and DRAM to retain data through power loss, system crashes, or normal shutdowns, requiring a battery to handle AC loss conditions. It works with RDIMMs in dual-processor configurations with a minimum of 12x RDIMMs, and cannot be mixed with LRDIMMs. Given the range of supported configurations, the installation guide should be consulted for full rules and restrictions.
Maximum of 12 NVDIMM-Ns can be installed in a system.

Dell's Gen14 lineup includes a boot option called BOSS (Boot Optimized Storage Subsystem) — a hardware RAID controller with a limited feature set designed specifically for booting a full OS drive. It presents M.2 SATA-only SSDs as either non-RAID disks or a single RAID 1 volume.
The Dell PowerEdge R940 rack server also includes an internal USB option and supports the IDSDM for booting a hypervisor OS in virtualization workloads.
