HPE DL560 Gen9 Base Knowledge
The ProLiant DL560 Gen9 Rack Server is a 2U Server Chassis with 2 processor slots available. The number of processors can be one, two, or four. For a 4-processor configuration, you would require an optional HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9 CPU Mezzanine Board kit (795107-B21). Mixing different processor models is not supported.
If only one processor is installed, only a quarter (12) of the total DIMM slots are available. When populating with four processors all (48) DIMM slots are available. RDIMM and LRDIMM are all distinct memory technologies and cannot be mixed within a server.
Maximum Capacity 6TB (48 x 128GB LRDIMM @2400MHz)>Maximum Capacity 1.5TB (48 x 32GB RDIMM @2400 MHz)
The DL560 Gen9 Rack Server From HPE holds up to 24 Drives. The DL560 comes with the embedded HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i Controller that supports up to 10 SATA drives. With the DL560 Gen9 you have the option to install a 12GB 9 Port SAS Controller which supports the 24 Drive Configuration.
If you would like to save a PCI slot. The DL560 Gen9 Supports the Adaptive RAID on Chip slot (AROC) Storage Controllers. The H240ar, P440ar, and P840ar are all supported in the DL560 Gen9 Rack Server. If you install a Performance Storage Controller you will need to install the 96W Storage Battery for SAS and Flash Backed Write Cache to work properly.

HPE DL560 Gen9 Drive Configurations
The DL560 Gen9 has 5 different storage upgrade kits. Below is the different drive configuration that is available for the DL560 Gen9 Rack Server.
- 8 Drives = 8SFF
- 10 Drives = 8SFF + 2SFF
- 14 Drives = 8SFF + 6 NVMe
- 16 Drives = 8SFF + 6 NVME + 2SFF
- 16 Drives = 8SFF + 8SFF
- 18 Drives = 8SFF + 8SFF + 2SFF
- 22 Drives = 8SFF + 6 NVMe + 8SFF
- 24 Drives = 8SFF + 8SFF + 8SFF
The first upgrade is the Universal Media Bay 1 Kit. It comes in two different types. HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9 2SFF Universal Media Bay Kit (793479-B21) or the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9 Universal Media Bay Kit (795090-B21). If you install any one of these kits, you now have the option to install either DVD-ROM (726536-B21) or DVD-RW (72653-B21).
This next option is not allowed to be installed with the kits above. They use the same Media Bay 1 slot. HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9 Bay1 8SFF Cage/Backplane Kit (795085-B21). There is another way to upgrade to 16SFF and keep the Media Bay 1 Kits as well. That is with the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9 Bay2 8SFF Cage/Backplane Kit (795084-B21). This upgrade kit is the best way to install 16SFF drives in the DL560 Gen9 Rack Server.
The fourth type of upgrade is for the NVMe Drives support. This DL560 Gen9 Rack Server supports up to 6 NVMe Drives with the HPE DL560 Gen9 NVMe 6 Solid State Drive Express Bay Enablement Kit (774743-B21). This kit comes with an Express Bay Bridge Board that takes up 1 PCI-e 3.0x16 slot.
With a combination of the above upgrade kits, we can make the 18, 22, and 24 Drive configurations. When installing more than 10 Drives you will need the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9 SAS Expander Card (804228-B21).
HPE DL560 Gen9 NVMe Drives
The Support for the NVMe drives comes from the installation of the HPE DL560 Gen9 NVMe 6 Solid State Drive Express Bay Enablement Kit (774743-B21). This kit can only be installed in Bay 2 and takes up 1 PCI-e 3.0x16 Slot with the Express Bay Bridge Board. You have another option to install NVMe drives and that is with the NVMe PCIe Workload Accelerators.
HPE DL560 Gen9 M.2
Similar to the NVMe workload accelerators, the M.2 drives can be installed on a standup PCI card with up to 2 M.2 Drives and the drives only use the B140i SATA controller. With 7 PCI slots, you should have plenty of room for any type of configuration you desire.
HPE DL560 Gen9 PCI Risers
The DL560 Gen9 has 3 PCI riser slots. PCI riser slot 1 is the primary slot and has two Riser Options. The secondary PCI riser, and the Expansion slot 7 only have 1 riser option. Below is a table showing you how many slots and what size PCI slot each riser has.

The DL560 Gen9 has a dedicated FlexibleLOM slot under the Primary riser. Only one FlexibleLOM can be added to the server. For 10Gb adapters, a minimum of two Gigabytes (2 GB) of server memory is required per adapter.
HPE DL560 Gen9 Cooling
The DL560 Gen9 comes standard with 6 Hot Plug Fans (with N+1 redundancy). For all processor configurations, the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9 Server requires six fan modules for redundancy. A fan failure causes a loss of cooling redundancy. A second fan failure or a missing fan module causes an orderly shutdown of the server.
HPE DL560 Gen9 GPU / Workload Accelerator
Two 9.5" single-wide cards are supported. The system supports Graphic Accelerators and NVMe Drive Workload Accelerators but does not have any GPU enablement kit for card support. Please check the NVMe Drive section for Workload Accelerator options.
HPE DL560 Gen9 Common Slot your power!
Mixing of power supplies in the same server is not supported. All power supplies must be of the same input voltage, output rating, and efficiency rating. If non-matching power supplies are installed, you may receive an error message and/or experience operational issues with your server.
