The Cisco MDS 9148S offers up to 48 autosensing Fibre Channel ports, supporting speeds of 2, 4, 8, and 16 Gbps, with each port delivering 16 Gbps of dedicated bandwidth. The base model includes 12 active ports and can be expanded in 12-port increments—up to 24, 36, or 48 ports—using the Cisco MDS 9148S On-Demand Port Activation license. Uniquely, the MDS 9148S is the only 1RU switch that scales from 12 to 48 high-performance Fibre Channel ports. It is also the first 16-Gbps Fibre Channel switch in a 1RU form factor designed with NVMe readiness. When deployed as an N-Port Virtualization (NPV) node or an N-Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) core, it offers a flexible and scalable solution for host connectivity—whether connecting to legacy Fibre Channel switches or multi-protocol Nexus NPV switches.
