HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus Base Knowledge.
Let’s start by explaining some differences between the DL380 Gen10 and the DL380 Gen10 Plus. The Plus server has upgraded CPUs with 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processors and has 8 more DIMMS for a total of 32 DIMMs. The Plus server has 2 extra Mid-Tray upgrade storage options. 8SFF U.3 x1 Mid Tray (P27193-B21) and the 8SFF U.3 x4 Mid Tray (P39769-B21) along with the 4LFF Mid Tray Kit (P26919-B21) internal drive options. Only one Mid-Tray can be installed at a time and a Drive Mid Tray cannot be selected with Processors above 165W. One major note is the High-Performance Heat Sink Kit (P27095-B21) and any FL PCIe Cards cannot be installed along with any Mid Tray. The Mid Tray sits on top of the DIMMS and the CPUs.
The DL380 Gen10 Plus is a 2U 2 Socket Rack Server with 32 total DIMMS 16 DIMM slots per processor, 8 channels per processor, and 2 DIMMs per channel. Every chassis for the Plus server is a Network Choice (NC) rack server. With no embedded network option, you must choose a network card.
The DL380 Gen10 Plus supports a maximum of 16 Intel Optane Persistent Memory with 2P 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Processors. This option requires the selection of a Maximum Performance Fan Kit (P14608-B21). If not all the DIMMs are filled out, you must install the HPE DDR4 DIMM Blank Kit (P07818-B21).

The 8SFF Chassis has the most options for upgrading storage. On the Front of the chassis, we can have quite a mix of drives and configurations. The front of the chassis has 3 Bays and can have either 8 SAS/SATA or NVMe drives installed in each bay. If you install the U.3 8SFF with a tri-mode controller you will be able to install a mix of drives. For Max NVMe drives to be installed you will need the AROC to NVMe adapter (P14602-B21) and the OCP NVMe adapter (P27094-B21) along with needed risers if necessary.
The 8SFF Chassis can also support the two internal Drive Bays. When the internal Midplane drive bays are installed, you will not be able to install a Full-Length PCIe card. The SFF chassis has the option of an 8SFF x1 Tri-Mode 24G U.3 BC Midplane Drive Cage Kit (P27193-B21), and a 2U 8SFF x4 Tri-Mode 24G U.3 BC Midplane Drive Cage Kit (P39769-B21). Only one can be installed at a time.
The SFF rear drives on the 8 SFF chassis can support up to 6 SFF drives with appropriate risers installed.
Please read the manual for more detailed information about available configurations.
24SFF Chassis
With 24SFF Chassis (SAS/SATA) can support the optional 8SFF mid tray (U.2/U.3) drives and/or up to 6SFF rear drive bay options to a total 38 SFF drives. The 24 SFF chassis ships with 6 performance fans as standard. Mixing of Drives (SAS/ SATA/ NVMe) is allowed on U.3 drive cages if selected along with Tri-Mode Controllers.

HPE Smart Storage Controllers
The chassis comes with an embedded SR100i storage controller. By default the SW RAID is disabled. To enable it please select this Software RAID (P28417-B21). The SW RAID and the VROC (R7J57A/ R7J58A) can’t be installed at the same time. If you install the VROC you must also install a second processor.
All performance RAID controllers are supported by the HPE Smart Storage Hybrid Capacitor (P02377-B21) or HPE Smart Storage Battery (P01366-B21), which supports multiple devices and are sold separately. This DL380 Gen10 Plus has many options to choose from along with the new Tri-Mode HPE controllers which allow you to mix drives in the server when installed with a U.3 cage.
This server supports many options for controllers to be installed. You have the normal stand-up PCIe card, you have the Flexible Smart Array Type-A Adaptive RAID on Chip (AROC) Cards, and the embedded SR100i which has support for 12 SATA and max 2 NVMe drives with appropriate risers installed. There is a lot of detailed information about Storage controllers and all the limitations of each one. For a more detailed insight into those limitations, I recommend you read the Spec Manual below.
HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus Boot Drives.
Boot Drives are a great way to load the OS for the server without taking up a drive. With the DL380 Gen10 Plus Rack Server, you can install the HPE NS204i-p x2 Lanes NVMe PCIe3 x8 OS Boot Device (P12965-B21). Which requires the UEFI boot mode to be enabled. The other boot option is the use of an HPE 32GB microSD RAID 1 USB Boot Drive (P21868-B21).
HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus PCI Risers
There are too many PCI riser options to talk about each one. Below is a table showing you the Slots, Drive count, and NVMe ports per riser. A second and or, third riser. Requires the selection of the second processor. For some of the risers, like the Side-By-Side risers. They are limited to a certain chassis. If you have a Mid-Plane Drive-Tray installed, none of the PCIe slots can hold an FL PCIe card. If you’re installing a Tri-Mode controller, not all drive cages are supported. A lot of the drive cages have rules about what needs to be installed as far as controllers that will support the drives installed. Please make sure to look up the list on the Spec Manual before the final configuration.

Networking Abilities | FlexibleLOM, Stand-up card
Since the DL380 Gen10 Plus Chassis options are all Network Choice (NC). You must install a network card of some sort. The DL380 Gen10 Plus supports the OCP 3.0 cards and up to 200GB PCIe cards with select riser configurations. Please make sure the x16 PCIe cards are in an x16 lane connector. Otherwise, there might be some performance issues. The OCP comes standard with x8 connector but can be upgraded to x16 with the x16 OCP Enablement kit (P36661-B21). This kit might be needed depending on your card installed. Only 1 OCP 3.0 card can be installed at one time.
When installing InfiniBand cards and other Network Adapters there are some major limitations. Here are some rules that apply to a lot of cards. Please read the spec manual for all the rules for each card.
- These cards are not supported with 12LFF/24SFF CTO config.
- These cards are not supported with mid-tray drive cages for both LFF/SFF chassis.
- Required to use Max Performance Fan Kit
- Not supported with DIMMs with more than 128GB
- Not supported with CPUs more than 240W
- Only supported on 1/2/4/5/7 PCIe slots, not supported in slots 3, and 6.
- Could observe sub-optimal performance if installed in x8 slot.
HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus Cooling
In general, the Maximum Performance fan kit is required when rear drives, or >205W Processors SKUs, or Intel Optane Persistent Memory, or High-Performance NVMe drives, or certain backplanes are populated. Can be selected only with 8SFF and 8LFF because the 12LFF and the 24SFF already come with the high-performance fan kit.
Processors with TDP equal to or greater than 150W require High-Performance Heatsink (P27095-B21). This option cannot be selected if any of the Midplane Drive cages are selected. The Midplane drive cages are installed on top of the DIMM and CPUs.
HPE DL380 Gen10 Plus Flex Slot your power!
Select a minimum (1), or maximum (2) power supply. Mixing of 2 different power supplies is NOT allowed. HPE Flexible Slot (Flex Slot) Power Supplies share a common electrical and physical design that allows for hot plug, tool-less installation into HPE ProLiant Gen10 Performance Servers. Flex Slot power supplies are certified for high-efficiency operation and offer multiple power output options, allowing users to "right-size" a power supply for specific server configurations. This flexibility helps to reduce power waste, lower overall energy costs, and avoid "trapped" power capacity in the data center.
More Info
The drives can be mixed when U.3 Drive cages and Tri-Mode Controllers are selected.
A lot of configurations are limited based on Chassis selected, please look up each item in question on the Spec Manual below for more detail.
When using the embedded SATA controller as the primary controller, there are many RAID settings that must be enabled with the correct FIO settings. Please read the spec manual for more details on how to enable it and what parts are needed.
For NVMe Drives, there are connectors / Risers that are needed to supply adequate ports to the drives. When installing NVMe drives on PCIe Risers, you might need the AROC to NVMe adapter (P14602-B21) and/or the OCP NVMe Adapter Kit (P27094-B21). These kits either provide the NVMe port or they supply the ports with the correct amount of PCIe lanes for the NVMe port to be supported.
