The HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen11 server is a high-density, four-socket (4S) server with high performance, scalability, and reliability, all in a 2U chassis. The MR (MegaRAID) and SR (SmartRAID) series use different RAID configuration tools and cannot be mixed in the same server. Both series support SAS, SATA, and NVMe drives when used with a tri-mode U.3 backplane, enabling mixed drive configurations. The server has no embedded software RAID — direct attached SATA drives operate in AHCI mode only, so a controller is required for any hardware RAID.

The SR series is the high-end controller line, only available in type-p PCIe form factor.
This is the go-to choice for high drive count configurations or maximum storage throughput. Like the cached MR controllers it requires a battery or capacitor for cache protection.

The MR series is the broader, more flexible controller line available in both type-o and type-p form factors.
The cached models (MR408i-o, MR416i-o, MR416i-p) add a Flash-Backed Write Cache (FBWC)
Choosing Between MR and SR
- Need OCP slot deployment → MR type-o only
- Mix up with direct attach drives and Trimode storage controller drives is not supported.
- Mix of x1, x4Trimode or EDSFF drive cage kit is not supported.
- Controllers with cache require either HPE 96W Smart Storage Battery 260mm Cable (P01367-B21) or HPE Smart Hybrid Capacitor w/ 260mm Cable (P02381-B21).
There are 2 expansion slot riser cards, both can be used as primary or secondary.
For DW GPU accelerator cards can only be populated in primary riser (slot 2) and secondary riser (slot 5).
