Instead of the usual direct-wired or simple expander backplanes, this version uses an on-board PCIe Gen5 switch chip that turns the backplane into a fully switched NVMe fabric. Each of the 24 U.3 NVMe drives gets its own dedicated ×4 PCIe Gen5 lanes straight from the switch, so the server can deliver the full ~14 GB/s read and ~10 GB/s write speed from every single drive simultaneously without any lane sharing or bottlenecks.

The switched board eliminates the traditional mid-plane or expander limitations and gives the R760 its headline 24× Gen5 NVMe capability. It connects to the CPUs with eight ×16 Gen5 cables.
